As a parent of 2 small children I am constantly worried about going to large events with them and the possibility of them wandering off from me or being lured away by a stranger. Or even while they are out and about with school or at a friends house or daycare.
As I waited for the lift at a large shopping centre here in Sydney about 3 years ago, a small child, about the same age as my daughter (around 5 years old) exited the lift on her own. There was NO-ONE else in the lift with her. She was crying uncontrollably looking for her mother. I was devastated not only for the child but for the poor mother, wondering how she must be feeling at this exact moment. I took the child to the information desk, but she was unable to give her name as she was too distraught. All they could do was make an announcement over the loud speaker, which would have been difficult to hear because of all the other background noise.
It was on my way home in the car that I thought "There has to be a better solution." I knew that child emergency identification cards existed in the USA, but hadn’t seen too many here in Australia. So the idea of "ID Your Child" was born.
